Help in Durham, N.C.
« on: February 21, 2012, 12:42:32 AM »
Okay, little background here. I am moving to Durham to attend school and after looking around a bit I have come to the conclusion it would be cheaper to buy a house there than rent. I have found a house that is in my price range and looks really nice but as I am in Colorado and cannot come check it out I’m hoping someone in the area can give me a little information.
All I’m interested in is if anyone could tell me if it’s in an alright neighborhood or if anyone has heard particularly bad things about the area. The house is located on Liberty St. and Spruce St. I’ve already used Google street map to look around but there’s only so much someone can tell from an image.

A house is a major investment; I don't think it's a good idea to buy one without even seeing it, unless you've got money to burn.  Maybe you can do a short-term lease or do an extended hotel stay while you're looking.  And don't skip the inspection, or you can end up buying a house with major problems.
Nirvana grails:  Reverse Gusty (upgrade), Peru Windy and Moonstone (upgrade), Brazil TAF upgrades, Argie Powder w/ white hair (upgrade), French Windy and Moondancer (upgrades), Spain TAF's, TE's, and piggies.  These are my biggest wants, but I'm looking for tons more nirvanas, especially Greeks, Brazilians, and Peruvians.  Feel free to PM me for sales or trades.  But please note that I'm also fairly picky.

I would ask the folks on this forum: http://www.city-data.com/forum/raleigh-durham-chapel-hill-cary/

They're very informative and can probably give you a lot more information. :) I'd also agree that it's probably a good idea to rent for a little while to check out neighborhoods before you buy.

Good luck!

Wow, that's too funny! I just moved to CO from that area! Durham does have some really bad spots, so be careful. And if you have a low-sitting car, sometimes you have to take detours because you'll bottom out. I'm afraid I don't know anything about that area though.

Home ownership is a huuuuuuuuuuge undertaking, and the costs involve more than renting a place ever would.  Do you plan to stay in Durham after school?

(I know nothing about Durham, btw.  I do visit Asheville often, though - but that's the complete other side of NC.)

Call the local police department and ask about the area, and that street in particular. They can at least tell you if they have a lot of calls for there.
