Sunfading Tutorial ^_^
« on: February 20, 2012, 10:06:27 AM »
Hi all!
so i have been answering a lot of questions about sunfading so i figured I might as well make a tutorial about it.

If anyone has additional input feel free to reply and I will add it :)

Flaws that can be fixed with sun fading:
  • yellowed ponies that used to be white
  • any kind of ink marks
Flaws that canNOT be fixed with sunfading:
  • cancer
  • pindot mold
  • regrind
DO NOT sunfade the following ponies:
  • G1 Gingerbread, Cherry Treats & US Starshine. They will actually "sunburn" and turn more brownish
  • some lavender/blue colored G1 ponies. sometimes they fade unevenly
Glitter Symbols:
  • do NOT put tape on glitter symbols!
it will remove the glitter when you take off the tape. What I do is flip the tape over to the non-sticky side and tape over that tape. so basically you have 2 layers of tape, but the sticky part never touches the glitter

NEEDED:
  • Foil
  • painters tape
  • sunny window
OPTIONAL:
  • Mirror(s)
Steps to Sunfade:
1. tear off little pieces of painters tape and cover any painted areas (eyes, symbols, blush)

2. Use foil to wrap around hair. if the head is already loose many times i will remove the tail. Red hair fades easily so be sure to cover the roots well

3. use bobby pins or clips to secure the foil down to the roots.

4. place in a sunny window on a mirror if one is available. You can also put additional mirrors standing up around the pony.

5. Flip the pony to either side periodically. leave in the window for 4-6 weeks (time will vary depending on weather and flaw of the pony)

Other Methods of Sunfading:
*NOTE* I personally have not tried these methods but I know others have had some success with them :)
  • use a black light/UV light instead of sun
  • wrap the pony in plastic Saran Wrap and use Sharpie to cover the symbols/eyes/blush
  • use acrylic paints to cover the symbols/eyes/blush. the paint can be removed with 70% rubbing alcohol

this is a great tutorial!
another pony that should be added to the "do not sunfade" list is g1 starshine. she can "sunburn" also in the same way as cherry threats. same with most white g3's, as they seem to turn yellow if you dont keep an eye on them.

the pinwheel and sugarberry look so much nicer now too!

Thank you so much for the tutorial. I really want to fix one of my ponies now. Sadly she is a white G3 so I hope I don't turn her yellow. >.<

Is there an advantage to only covering the hair instead of the whole pony in foil?
