Well, of course it's extremely expensive (extreeeeemely), and based on existent characters, but those plushies are handcrafted by some talented sewers, they're one-of-a-kind, and represent a lot of work (I mean in hours, but also in experience. Not everybody can translate patterns directly from a drawing and make it looks good).

And, look closely, most of the plushies have embroidered eyes and symbols, meaning that they've been sewed on very specific (and expensive) machines, maybe by professionnal sewers, doing this for their fun.

Those can't be considered as toys, but as collectibles.

That way, even if I couldn't myself put that price, I perfectly understand that some people do.

(really, look at BJD's, for example, some are going so high in price, just because the make up has been done by someone special, or is very beautiful, even on a very usual model. That's kinda the same to me.)

And frankly, it's great to see some people are ready to pay that price, because it really pays for the work the sewer had on it (I mean, 200 or 300 bucks is what, in hours ? 20 or 30, bad paid ? And I guess the sewer maybe spent much more on these plushes)

There was a Fluttershy dressed for the Gala plush that sold for $2500 a few months back.  Holy cannoli, that's a lot of money to pay for a stuffed friend.  **it was really amazing thought!!**

When my boyfriend and I bought materials to make two small plushies it costed us $35 - $40, and we were only using anti-pill fleece that was already 40% off. X___X Can't imagine how much minky costs. Either way, I understand how they can be expensive, but I will never understand when it costs SEVERAL hundreds or even thousands.

well, I am in awe of such talent. I cant afford to play that much for plushies, but many of them are a work of art. And I do agree many of the custom plushies are of much better quality than those that are mass produced.

It would be nice to see some G1 custom plushies. I think Sweet Stuff would be divine (lol)

It's all far too rich for my blood but I love watching from the sidelines. Some of those people put a lot of work into their craft and end up with true art. The prices are insane but in a way I'm also happy their work is being rewarded.

Another way of getting a better plush that isn't as expensive but less work then doing it from scratch? Mod one.
Cloudkicker on some other pony site is messing around with her Canterlot Twilight to give it a better mane/tail, less of a double chin and a less square butt.

I'm always super impressed at the quality of some of these plushies and I believe the artist deserves every cent.  It's not an art I have dared to try, but really wish I could, but I know it takes a lot of time and money to get it started.

I would love to learn how to make plushies, though.  Not just MLP ones, but b/c I collect really strange animal plushies and would love to figure out how to make them myself!  I'd love to talk to a plushie artist and get tips or even a few lessons!

Definitely. It's not just a matter of getting yourself a sewing machine and whipping one up. They all have a great skill and probably years of experience. For some of these people this is their full time job (not just the ponies, but plush making).

Some of those plush are amazing. However, i sure hope those buyers will still love FIM in a couple of years. But than again, i wouldn't spend thousands on any kind of collectible out there.

Yeah I was wondering too about the copyright infringement thing... these are intellectual property, so isn't making a huge profit on someone else's characters kind of like... fraud? I'm wondering if these high sales are going to result in high attorney fees for some people.

Yeah, I believe most of these plushies really deserve that price. Think of them being akin to sculptures made out of fabric.

Me...I'd love a cheaper plushie to hug. Something that at least looks something like the character and doesn't look like it has a broken neck. I'm looking at you G4 plushies. DX
