There are quite a few fans of the show who want more show accurate things out there, and for a while now they've been willing to pay silly prices for more show accurate toys, and I think more importantly plushies. Some prefer unofficial stuff to the official, and do know it was homemade.

If only I didn't have dumb fingers, I'd try to make some, probably make a bit of money

Some of those plushies look AMAZING. It's a work of art lol. I would never pay that much myself though.

My friends keep telling me to attempt making some because I do a lot of sewing and used to make teddy bears/plushies all the time. I don't think I want to though. Plus I live a smoking household (not me D:) and as I recently learned, ALL my clothes smell of it so I'd imagine the fabrics I work with do too.

It's the bronies I think. For some reason they don't mind paying amounts like that and even seek out custom plushies to buy. I have seen them sell for more than $1000.
Oldbie G1 collectors wouldn't believe it when they first saw it, then they hurried to their sewing machines I guess. I would do that myself I had the time and the skills lol 

There have been all sorts of great custom plushies lately on ebay, even talking ones and such, so obviously a lot of work went into some of them. I mean some of those plushies are actually worth the amount they sell for. Not all of them though!
And yes, show accuracy is probably a big part of it.

I am one of those people who believes you should be able to pay what you like for what you want....I have paid over the odds for items in the past and am sure I will again.

BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT even I will admit some of the plushie prices are amazing...and I seriously wish I had time to make a couple simply to sell!

omg seriously?! i never check the 1990-now section so i guess thats why i never noticed... that luna plush is already almost at $800 with some time to go yet....

Yep, these go for a LOT. There was a Fluttershy gala plush that went for 2.5k USD. There was also a Rainbow Dash plush, measuring at about four feet tall, that sold for nearly 5k USD. If I had a sewing machine, I would be churning out plushies like there's no tomorrow

What I really love about the pony community is all the gusto fans have to make show-accurate items. On some other pony site, there is a thread with details on how to make your own plushy or how to make your brush-able Apple Jack a cowgirl hat. I think it's great that people are getting creative.

These homemade plushies so so much better than the licensed ones. If people want to bid up to that amount, that is okay with me. It is made by the pony community and fans FOR the fans.

I have nothing against people paying out the butt for some of those plushies. Good on the people making them, that's awesome. If your talent is making plush toys, and you're good at it, you deserve to profit from it. I'm stoked to see people with talent making money with their talents. I hope people keep paying 1k+ for some of those plushies. The people who are making them have put in A LOT of time to get that good, and they've earned their cash ins.

My real puzzlement on that Dashie plush @ 5K....why wouldnt you commissions someone to make you one for a significantly lower amount of money?

As I said....I believe you should be able to over pay as much as you like for what you want...I have done so for G1 ponies and accessories and will happily do so again...but at the same time I will join in the "wow!! really?" comments cause its new phenomenon for me to see hand made plushies going so high
