(Pics added) Italy Applejack restoration questions
« on: February 11, 2012, 05:54:13 PM »
I understand that it's a matter  of preference as to how far to go in restoring a pony. I know some people want it to keep its original hair and others prefer the hair to be replaced if its bad.

I have a g1 Applejack from Italy that the community has persuaded me to clean up. She has a horribly frizzed mane and tail  that I have managed to smooth out a bit. But her tail has a mild case of tail rust.

I have the correct color to replace her hair and I am experienced at doing so, but I know some people don't like that. What do you guys think?

Her eyes and her cutie mark both have paint scratched off.  She has a neon pink pen mark on her display side rear leg where it looks like someone tried to draw a heart.

Should I replace the hair an touch up the paint? Leave as is? I have no idea what she would be worth in terms of money and would love to hear some numbers or offers. I'll upload a picture of her in an hour or so if I can. I'm unable to at the moment.

Edited to add pics - I forgot to put her ribbon back on for the pictures. She still has her original tail ribbon.

For the tail rust you can just remove her tail through her head, remove the washer, replace it with plastic zip ties (http://www.mlptp.net/tutorials/makingtails.html) and wash the rust off with some whitening toothpaste or dawn soap.
The frizzy mane can be easily fixed with a hair straightener at no higher than 180 degrees fahrenheit. The pen marks can be sunfaded away and as for the paint I would personally try to retouch the eyes but maybe the symbol. I dunno, I trust myself with small lines on a face but not too much when it comes to replicating a symbol. :(  Depends on how much you trust your painting skills, I suppose! XD
I'm getting a Peruvian Applejack with faded symbols in the mail sometime soonish, so I'm also debating this question with myself. X____X

But I suppose if you plan on keeping her you could always replace the hair. If you'd just like to sell her then I am sure someone will be willing to buy her as-is!

imho, an Italian AJ is uncommon enough that you shouldn't bait her (as you know  ), but common enough that you shouldn't worry about rehairing her or repainting her symbols if that's what makes her special to you.

If you are planning on fixing her up to sell, however, I would leaver her original :)

Yeah, I am basically looking to sell her, and want to clean her up as nice as possible. I just know I have seen that some people prefer the pony left as is, and others prefer it fixed up with new hair..  And I have never dealt with restoring or selling a G1 before so I wasn't sure what extremes I should go to.

I tired looking for her on ebay to get some idea of a price for her, but I couldnt find her.

That symbol rub is definitely not bad enough to majorly worry about! The eyes seem okay too, especially if you're just going to sell her. Still a very pretty girly and I'm sure she'd sell easily. :D

i would have said less about $6-$8, then again i find her more "common" where i live ;) location does play its part in a pony's value.

i see no harm in her being rehaired, thought i would try an straighten it first with flat irons and conditioner :) the symbols and eyes look typically italian to me so i would leave them ;)

I'm glad you're asking this question because I have been toying with the idea of rehairing one of my Argie wingers.  Your AJ is lovely, her hair kind of looks like mine;)   Since you're selling her, I would ask the buyer what they would prefer.

if she is selling then i would leave the pony as it is ;)

michelle have you tried straightening your ponies hair? argie hair does respond well to flat ironing.

Definitely agree that if you're selling, it's usually better to leave as it (unless there is a major haircut, or half a foot issing or something). I would agree with the $6-8 value.
