I heard of the live-action version as well.  Mia Farrow who did the voice for Amalthea and the unicorn was supposed to be Molly Grue.  Here's the movie website for the live-action version.  I don't think it's gotten very far.

I'm on Peter Beagle's mailing list, and this comes directly from the newsletter sent Oct 14, 2011 after reaching a settlement for The Last Unicorn (its been a legal mess for years).

Q: For years there's been talk of a live-action Last Unicorn film. Does the settlement mean that there will finally be one?

A: The live-action film is a separate issue. A small London-based company called Continent Films currently has the exclusive right to do a remake of The Last Unicorn, and they will own that right until February 2015. Maybe they'll get a movie off the ground before they lose the rights, maybe they won't: we don't know. All we can say is that Peter hopes they won't get anything made, because he doesn't trust them to do a good job.



On a side note, Peter goes to a lot of conventions (New York Comic Con, Wizard World Chicago, C2E2, etc) and is one of the nicest people you will ever meet.  He'll also friend you on facebook, so if you're a fan of TLU or his other work, definitely go friend him.  Or get on the mailing list at peterbeagle.com or conlanpress.com although I think Conlan is updated more often.

I ended up buying this book yesturday!    I love manga books so I figured I would like this book even more!  And my daughter will probably love looking at the pictures when I read it to her!    I loved the illustrations they gave as examples at the link you gave and the pic you posted!  They convinced me.  Thanks so much for the suggestion.  I can't wait til the book gets here!
