Pony frizzy hair fix. Straightener question.

Ive read so many tutorials for fixing frizzy pony hair with a hair straightener but i always read where it says put it on the low setting.
 
Ive had two straighteners now, one of which i just bought and neither one has had a high/low setting. So my question is: Is it ok to use a straightener that doesnt have a setting in which you select? or will it get to hot? They also say not to get them wet so for those two reasons i have yet to try it... I would hate to make a pony worse instead of better....

it probably says somewhere on the packaging for your straighteners what temperature they heat to, i set mine to 120 degrees when doing pony hair and that works ok

I would test them out on some baits first if you're unsure I had no idea either when I first got my straightner (and a G3 Rainbow Flash now has a lock of melted hair because of it   ), but by using baits to practice I got a feel for the right setting to use.

My straightener doesnt have any settings though. Its either on or off..... To bad i dont have any baits at the moment...

I use a straightener with no heat settings, it's 210c.

I just make sure the hair is very wet and fully saturated in conditioner. Also for safety, I angle the straightener so to water won't run back towards the cord.

Make sure the hair is wet and conditioned.

 I would use it early before it heats up completely. Then I would use it as It's cooling down too.

I wouldn't use it at full heat.

The one i usually use has one setting... dunno what it is but ive been using it for years and years.  i just make sure the hair is really wet and has conditioner on it.. although sometimes i need to do it a ocuple times.  It seems that if i hear a slight sizzle it means it's working.  I don't know if that's the water or the hair making the noise! :/
I do want to try out my steamer straightener i found at the thrifty.. I have used it on my hair and it is very nice.  Maybe it will work on ponies just as well?!

Try taking a hair from somewhere you wouldn't miss it, like in the middle of it's tail and try the straightener on that ONE hair. If it melts, then... It melts...And you have to cut it off. At least it wouldn't show anywhere. If it doesn't melt, then there you go! Either way you get your answer without risking the whole mane/tail.

Yes, wet and conditions and "move" the straightener reasonably fast without hesitation I have found...and dont let it dry the hair and conditioner out if you want to keep using the straighteners then wet the hair and condition again - nothing worse that dryish nylon hair and hot straighteners!!!!!

However, straightener are such awkward beasts and different models all have different habits - you should test and practice until you are comfortable on a bait before moving on to the ponies you want to fix.

On most hair I work with 180 degrees, on sensitive hair I work with 140 degrees. I condition the hair over night, rinse it and use the flat iron until the hair is dry. Never had any problems with that
 
But I would not recommended using an iron without settings.

My first straightener didn't have heat settings either, but I managed to use it without problems.
I made sure he hair was nice and wet, and then turned the thing on and started to work. My two indicators for when to turn it back off were sizzling water if the hair was still fairly wet, and the hair turning so hot it started to be a tad uncomfortable to put it back in the straightener for another pass. When either of those happened I'd turn the straightener off for a a little while to let it cool a bit and then back on.

I'd say test your own straightener carefully on small patches of hair until you get the hang of it, so you don't ruin an entire main or tail if you have an accident. some hairs from the middle of the tail may be a good idea indeed.
A bait pony is an ever better idea I suppose.

You can get a really cheap (like $20) hair straightener at Walmart that has like 20 heat settings I used to use that one with no problems! I got a Chi hair straightener that heats up super quick and to like 375 degrees or something like that... I imagine that would equal instant pony hair melt lol.

It would probably start to melt at 200+
I did that with a frizzy haired Dewdrop Dazzle and it melted at 200 for some reason. Generally they should withstand up to 250, but apparently not always. I straighten my G1s with my Chi straightener at 175 for maximum softness!

I recognized that flat irons work much better on G1 hair than on G4 hair...
