cleaning surface stains on g1s?
« on: February 03, 2012, 11:15:34 AM »
What is the best thing to use for cleaning surface stains on a g1 that won't come off with just soap and water? Will acetone ruin the body?

As long as you are not dipping the pony in acetone you will be fine - use a cotton bud [q-tip] and dip it in the acetone and then gently rub the cotton bud on the pony; note that acetone will remove symbols, blush, freckles and eye paint. Also make sure to carefully wipe away any acetone remaining dont let it simply evaporate other wise you could just spread the mark.

You can also use a magic eraser for some tougher marks.

I usually try Dawn dish soap and hot water with a face cloth. If that doesn't work I try a Mr. Clean magic eraser, but be careful around symbols as that will take them off if you scrub too hard. If they're super stubborn I suppose you can try acetone, but still be careful around paint as acetone wipes it off. And be sure to wash the pony after it's been exposed to acetone!

I agree with the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. As long as you are careful around the symbols and eyes it should work out okay.
It has worked wonders on some of my dirty ponies.

Here is a little more on stain removals if you want to look.

I use mr. Clean magic erasers or acetone too. And sun fading works great for marker/highlighter/pen marks.

Alright thanks for the advice! I have acetone and have used it to clean g3s but wasnt sure if it would make a difference on the g1s body. I didnt want to damage anything and figured I should be safe and just ask. Sunfading will work for cancer spots good right??

Not necessarily. Sometimes it lightens them and sometimes it doesn't do anything. It usually will not make them go away, though.

Nope...cancer and age marks are pretty much permanent...these and regrind are the only things you cant fix with sun, chemicals or determination.

There was a post not that long ago where someone seemed to have luck with cancer and sun fading but I have never ever seen it more than once....sun fading works to remove stains on the surface of the plastic but cancer and regrind tend to be embedded in the plastic so cant be completely "cured"

However, anything is worth a shot and there is no harm in trying!

Aww bummer that sunfading doesnt remove those things or do much to improve them. Oh well, poor windy will just have to get cleaned up and sit in the collection the way she is lol
