Put nothing on a pony but the pony itself. Even their colorful clothes will leach out onto their skin in the right conditions.

Also, stained wood shelving will stain their feet if they stand on it too long. I now stand all of my ponies on a piece of white paper on the wood shelf of my cabinet.

Elastic bands deteriorate and can do so rather fast - as such their colour leeches out - as others have said before if you dont want to risk stains, dont use coloured elastic bands in hair or on body....even if they only have a light colour tint

There isnt as much "elastic" in a lot of the clear ones but they wont cause the same level of damage!

You know, this reminds me of a magazine article I read a long time ago, detailing the "workout" Barbie toys have to go through at Mattel before they're put on the shelves. They put the Barbie toys in a machine that bends their arms and legs 1,000 times in a row to make sure the joints don't break, throw her in a pool for 52 hours to make sure the bathing suit colors don't bleed, etc etc.

Quality control, Hasbro!

The first thing I always do when getting a new pony is remove the elastics. As a regular receiver of second-hand toys when I was a child, I've got the damage old elastics can do stuck in my brain.
