Pony Cancer question

I know pony cancer is bad for ponies and spread from pony to pony, but what exactly is it?

We have a member who used to look at these things under a microscope. The only thing I think she found in a "cancer" spot was some bacteria. They were dead already (old age? antibacterial cleaning agents?) but if they were alive they certainly could spread. The thing I do with all my new ponies is a diluted bleach bath. At least if there is bacteria hopefully it will be dead then.

Yeah, I read somewhere that it's some kind of bacteria. I remember seeing someone put some baking soda on it, then spritzed it with vinegar and let it bubble up, and it supposedly lightened it a lot. I have yet to come across a pony with cancer, but I think it'd be worth a shot if you're dealing with it. C:
