Favorite non-pony quotes
« on: February 01, 2012, 07:48:00 AM »
We all have them...a quote(s) we use often or just adore.

It's hard to pick one so I'm sure we have them for all situations..list a few!

General:

““The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.””  - Albert Einstein

when dealing with my kids:

"How sharper than a serpent's tooth it is. To have a thankless child!" - King Lear

When dealing with people who use the word wish:

"If wishes were horses, beggars would ride." - Proverb

when I'm stressing over an art piece:

"Have no fear of perfection - you'll never reach it" - Salvador Dali

The best advice I've gotten from anyone ever, and my favourite quote is from Adam Savage, the goofy redhead from Mythbusters who's started dying his hair blonde. He commonly gives lectures about his passions and ambitions. In one of them he said the most important thing you can do is 'Be curious'. That's the foundation of becoming an expert in something. It doesn't matter what it is, if it's tailoring, music, mechanical engineering, painting, anything. If you're curious about something you're going to ask questions, and understand how it works. At the bottom of every professional in any field is a deeply rooted curiosity about that they do.

I look up to people like Jamie Hyneman, Adam Savage, Nathan Myrhvold, and other polymaths. I someday hope to amass as many skills and as much knowledge as they have. Nathan Myrhvold, for those who are unfamiliar with him, is a man with three expertise. He's a world class chef, has won the Pulitzer for his nature photography, he was the Chief Technology Officer for Microsoft, and holds hundreds of patents. I'm sure his talents don't stop there, but those are just the ones I know about. Jamie Hyneman & Adam Savage have a ton of skillsets. They're as comfortable with a welding torch as they are with a sewing machine. Their engineering know-how and problem solving skills are top notch. I strive to have a skillset like that, and I'm working on it. I'm a good baker, I'm an amateur tailor, I don't take my car to a mechanic, I take it to my brothers garage and mend it myself. I can dismantle and reassemble pretty much any two stroke engine you put in front of me, I know an awful lot about rotary aircraft engines. I'm a photographer, have my own darkroom, and have gotten some shots licensed. I'm fascinated with noise and acoustics, recording technology and acoustics are things of which I have an intimate understanding. I play double bass and I have a solid understand of music, though it's not as good as I'd like it to be, which is why I'm looking to go back to school for theory and composition. Lately, I've been getting into tires. Like, car tires. That's the next rabbit hole down which I'm going to dive, cutting tires, and tire compounds.

I'm digressing here, but all of my interests are due to a curiosity about how all of those things work. Doing something is never enough for me, I have a zest for understanding the workings of things. I can't just know that a two stroke engine has an intake and an exhaust, I'm compelled by curiosity to understand the entirety of thing. It's not that my curiosity was sparked by Adam Savage saying 'be curious', it was rooted, and made permanent by hearing him say it.

tl;dr my favourite quote is from Adam Savage, "Be curious".
That's a long answer.

I do the same thing...I know the quote but I wind up putting it into my own words. Like a misquoted quote but not really ^_^

'Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times. If one only remembers, to turn on the light.' ~Albus Dumbledore
(eloquent version of "find the silver lining")

There's one quote I'll always cherish. My gran always says, when referring to passing or those who have passed;
"One brings roses in life." Meaning, you must love and cherish in life, not death.

I must say, I prefer the quote in Afrikaans (her first language), it's much prettier! :)

-Make like a Nike (just DO IT).
-If you're gonna walk on thin ice, you might as well dance.

I know there are others, just can't think of any right now...

"Let's make like a bread truck and haul buns!"
Two more little devils jumped over the wall.
Saying turn her out father, she'll murder us all.
