Playset Restorers HELP! My universe is about to end!!!
« on: January 31, 2012, 04:23:03 PM »
Ok, it's not quite that dramatic, but I need a bit of advice.

]From everything I've read people are using
Salon Care 50 Volume Creme Developer to whiten playsets.
http://www.mlppreservationproject.com/misc.html#Playsets

but all I can find online is
Salon Care 40 Volume Creme Developer

http://www.amazon.com/Salon-Care-Creme-Developer-oz/dp/B004FVROT0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1328055063&sr=8-1

Is there a difference?  Will the 40 work?  I've got a yellow Show Stable and Waterfall that I'm DYING to whiten and I don't want to spend the money on something that won't work.

Thanks!

I've never used those products for whitening, I would find a bait baby carriage and test it out :)

I have heard that hydrogen peroxide works wonders (you need the right solution though).

Yeah, this is the creme with the hydrogen peroxide in it.  I'm just not sure what the difference is between the 40 and the 50.   :(

The 40 volume should work fine.  It's just a slightly lower concentration; so, it may take a bit longer than the 50.  Actually, I've heard you need a beauticians license (or whatever they call it) to buy the 50 volume.  I had no problem walking into a Sally's and buying it off the shelf; so, either they don't always pay attention or it depends on where you live.  Either way, that's probably the reason you can't find it online.

I have found at Sallys that it depends who you get behind the counter as to what they will sell you! Although I dont think its as strict over here as in the US....

The higher the number, the more concentrated the Peroxide, so 50 vol is stronger than 40 vol.

I believe in the UK you have a have a licence to buy 60 vol but then you would never use that on someones hair, you would buy it so you can dilute it to either 20, 30 or 40 vol as needed

I've never tried it on playsets but have seen examples of where it works well. Just be careful with the stuff, wear gloves and have good ventilation - it releases oxygen as it works, so no naked flames! Also, make sure the bottle is done up tight when your'e not using it as if its left open the peroxide de pressurises and it basically turns into water (don't try drinking it though! lol)

Thanks!  That's so nice of you!  I work on it when I have time and life gets in the way a lot.  I expect it to be a couple of years before I'm finished posting the progress on fixing up my own collection.  I don't know when you looked at it last, but I completely revamped it recently and fixed some of it's problems.  I'm also putting the dates and descriptions of updates on the home page now.  I just finished some on the 27th.  Thanks again for the compliments!!!  :)

I don't know much about this product but its really frustrating when you entire show stable is white except one door.  I tried all sorts of things to whiten my door so...since none of those worked I may try to find this product. Thanks for posting about it.
