How Bad is OxiClean for Glitter Symbols?
« on: January 29, 2012, 03:42:55 PM »
I know it will take off the glitter.  Does it remove the symbol completely or does it leave the paint?  Does the temperature of the water or the amount of time you let the pony soak affect how bad it is for the symbols?

A lady at church gave me a HUGE box of ponies when she found out that I collect them.  They were her son's and they have definitely not been stored well over the years.  Most of these are common, but the mildew seems to be removable.  I'd like to clean them up enough to sell them, but need to find a safe way to do it quickly for time's sake.

I've cleaned up the ones with regular symbols that I intend to keep and an OxiClean bath takes the mildew right off.  Unfortunately, there are TONS of glitter symbol ones that I would like to clean up enough to sell or trade.

The photo is of one pile, there are three piles of these.

Included in the bunch was a complete set of Birthflower Ponies, most of which are cleaning up ok, and a matching sheet set.  Not too shabby!

I have not had any issues soaking in oxyclean solution with glitter symbols...but I make sure the solution is pretty weak :)

But if you are worried about it, stick to the magic eraser :) It is a great clean up tool!

I've used it on several ponies, including a current restore project that has glitter symbols (baby Moondancer). I didn't see any glitter lose after the oxybath so I think it just depends on the pony and how strong the solution is.
My DeviantArt, why not drop by and take a look!

I've also used oxyclean on a glitter symbol pony and didn't notice any glitter loss, and she soaked in there for a long time. I guess it depends on the pony?

I got glitter loss on several ponies last time I used Oxyclean, also had loss of the iridescent paint on TEs. In my case it left a bit of glitter paint. It didn't get rid of the glitter completely but enough to make the symbols look like they've lot a fair amount of glitter and devalue them.
The main glitter loss seemed to be when I wiped them dry with a towel, I found if I dabbed them dry it helped a little, but I wouldn't risk it again.

I've used oxyclean on glitter symbol ponies without any issues before although the solution i use for them is weaker than i would use for a normal pony bath (so half a scoop rather than a full one). Also I dont let them soak in there as long either, and I let them dry naturally around the symbol so as not to rub any off accidently :relaxed:
Oxyclean definitely does take the coating off TE's eyes and Princess pony symbols though so be careful not to get those wet if you give those types of ponies an oxclean bath ;)
Also  oxyclean is no good for washing pony or doll clothes that are made of shiny material as it will take it off the shine or fade out all of the color even after a short time . I learned this the hard way on a silver pony handbag and a Jem dress :yikes:   Its fine to wash pony or doll clothers made of normal non-shiny material in it though

I'm sure I've used it on glitter ponies with little problem, I have always been told not to use it on princess or TE ponies though

Don't feel bad! I haven't either! I prefer to start with something more gentle and work my way up to the stronger cleaners only if I have to, and I rarely soak anything. But with so many ponies needing to be cleaned at once here, I'd probably give them all a bath too rather than clean them one by one.
