Re-pinking hair....
« on: January 24, 2012, 03:57:32 PM »
Ok - I know some people might be totally against re-pinking G1 hair, but I have to confess to being a crim in that regard if the pony is well and truly intended to be part of my collection! (In which case, guilty about 4 times over... oh, YumYum, how pretty you are now!!). I would like to state too that I would never sell a re-pinked pony without mentioning the hair had been re-coloured!

My latest touch up was Baby Cotton Candy who I've had for a little while now, and had always intended to restore to former glory as she is lovely in all other respects. Have to admit - I was enchanted with the result! Here is a before and after (sadly the light makes the hair look a little darker in places!):

So, I figure there must be other re-pinkers out there! I'd love to see some before and after shots - anyone want to share?  :)

Short pinking explanation:
Hot water in bowl (plastic ice cream containers work well, fill up bottom about an inch), 1/4 tsp (or less) rose color rit dye crystals, stir. Swish pony hair in dye for a few seconds, rinse with cold water.

Looks great. :) I have a TE whose pink stripe has turned white and maybe I'll fix her up one of these days. That sunny sparkle pony too.

I've pinked TONS of ponies. Just don't really have good before pics, I usually wait to take pics after they look their best.

Thanks for the compliments, guys  :)   Sourdough - at the time I did Baby Cotton Candy, I also very lightly touched up my Curly Lock's streak - came up great, not excessively vibrant; just looks slightly faded as opposed to white! I found a tooth pick useful in separating out the hairs from the streak I wanted to colour from the others  ;)

And now preparing myself for hate mail.... I don't have any dye (and am too lazy to find the right one....) so, I experimented with pink food colouring, with great success. I've used it ever since. I don't feel too bad about it - I've heard some people use red fizzy drink!! And I do only colour ponies I intend to keep.

I'm careful with how much I put in, and I use hot water (I found it seems to fix better). Rinse and repeat several times till I have the desired darkness. I then condition, and the colour holds nicely.

If you guys do find photos, even 'after' shots - stick 'em up!  :)

Rit dye in rose pink gets the closest I've found.

Here is a repink on frizzy dry hair, repink on silky hair (tail was still a little pink, mane was white), and original.

ooh yah for photos!

Here is another re-pink I did... YumYum's tail still had a hint of pink, but her mane had gone pretty much white. I love her; she's one of my favourites <3

I'm debating re-pinking a few of my Little Flitters.  I've had a hard time tracking down rit dye in the right shade though.  Butterfly, your wingers look gorgeous and you've just convinced me to take the plunge:)

Before and after! Came out exactly how I remember it when I saw a Mex baby Quackers without the faded hair, so I'm pretty pleased.

I use Rit Dye for mine.  I would be far too scared to use food colouring!

I'm a little odd, cause I've used boiling hot water and crimson red watercolor for re-pinking... And it has been working like a charm!
