Smelly pony hair help needed!
« on: January 23, 2012, 11:07:34 AM »
Hello everyone, I need some help with my Water Fire. I bought her online and she has a really bad smell in her hair that I can't seem to get out no matter how many times I wash her. It's not a smoke smell it kind of smells like burnt plastic but it's hard to describe.

Short of re-hairing her is there any way I can get the smell out of her hair? I've washed her with both baby shampoo and regular shampoo but she still has stinky hair.

I would put her in an airtight bag with a used dryer sheet.

Leave her for a few days.

 I hope that works!

Thank you, I'll have to try that!

Try hanging her upside down and spraying her hair with Febreeze, then let her air dry for a day or so.  I've always had good luck with that.  Hope this helps!

I've heard soaking them in vinegar for a little bit can take out cigarette smell and not leave a vinegar scent. Or maybe try baking soda.

I like to use vinegar to get rid of smells (about 1/8 cup vinegar mixed into a half gallon of water) - let her hair soak in the solution, then rinse with cold water.

You might also try putting the pony in a Ziploc bag with either baking soda or kitty litter.  Good luck!

I think boiling the pony hair might possibly help as well... boil and then use vinegar and baking soda?  I have washed pony hair (although, none with a smell that stuck) with boiling water, then used baking soda, making a  'paste' with lemon juice and water, a light rinse/soak with vinegar, and then a final rinse out with boiling water.  I hope that works!  I know it helps get rid of rust!!  :)

You could also try mixing some hair conditioner and water in a bowl (still making sure it's a little thick) and leave her in the bowl for about 24 hours. It seemed to work fine with one of the ponies I had with some strange smelling hair. The hair comes out soft and smells wonderful. You could also try an oxy boil, that just makes it smell...Like oxy. :p

I have the best luck getting smells out simply by leaving the pony outside in the shade for three days to a week. I live in a very windy place and when I come back any smell is gone. I would try this before using hash chemicals on your pony.
