Is there some unmentioned trick to getting curls to look nice?
« on: January 17, 2012, 08:16:57 PM »
 I just failed to curl a ponies hair. Again.
I have read every guide on this, I've used pipe cleaners, rollars, straws and bobby pins, room temp water, hot water...
I've rolled them one way, rolled them another way...

Yeeesh! Tails I just curl up in rollars, sit 'em over night, and they're goooorgeous... But manes!
Manes are giving me grief.

I suppose I could have posted this in customs, but since this is just ponies in general, and the grief my G1's are giving me... here seems fine...

How much hair do you curl? How big are the sections you curl?
Why must my curls stick straight uuup? o.O

... And to make the thread more general...
Lets all share our pony styling horror stories...

What pony have you been unable to juuust get to look right?  >_<

try doing your curls the same way as the tail, but *don't* go all the way to the hairline, stop about 1/2 an inch from it.  wrap that bit flat against the neck the way you want it to lay, this gives the hair a straight bit to lay right. :)

I feel like I always mess up curls, so you're not alone. They always end up so loose. But, I never let them sit overnight... I'm too impatient. XD

Keeping the hair wet when you put it in curlers seems to help them stay better.
One of my friends wrote a styling primer, maybe it can help you out; http://ponies.doctormowinckel.com/?p=38

Are you talking straw curls?  I think I have a picture of my Streaky in the process of being curled (her hair was a rats nest when I bought her)

Ah hah!

So I wash and condition the hair with super hot water, then wrap sections around straws and then wrap the bottoms in paper towels.  This keeps the bottom from getting all funky.  And then I either use tiny rubber bands (left over from when I had braces... like 9 years ago lol) or bobby pins to secure the straws.  And then I use rubber bands to attach the straws to the body in some way, which I think keeps them tighter to the body.  Then I run some almost boiling water over the hair one last time and let it sit like that for a couple days to make sure it sets.

My firsts attempts at curling went quite well, though the results aren't perfect yet.

Clear tinsel is turning into a horror story though.
Good thing I decided to buy a cheap secondhand g3 to try and practice fixing clear tinsel, what a nightmare.
Even if I do finally manage to find the way to fix the bit I haven't managed to completely ruin yet, she'll probably end up as my first de-tinseling job as well. >>

At least I'm ruining the tinsel on a g3 who will look just fine without it, instead of my Pony Bride and Princess Sparkle....

Coffee stirring straws are what I used on one, then fluffed a bit after taking them out.  Not quite Pinkie Pie wild, but fluffy curly.  :)

Sometimes I do well with mine, but other times I spectacularly fail... I tried to comb out the curls I gave to G4 Rarity for a bit of a softer look but it instantly frizzed  :drunk:

Aww, poor Rarity.

Mine has a pretty soft wavy sort of thing going on that I managed by just curling the hair around my finger and holding it like that for a good few minutes or so. But I don't know very much about holding tight, smooth curls.

The photos shown are always the way I do mine too. They always come out perfect EXCEPT for those pesky ends sometimes also seen in the photos posted. If we're talking G3 here, I just trim the frizz or non curled ends a tad so they sit better. If you are a keeping every last piece of hair per pony, I'm not sure what to tell you. Bc ultimately no matter how you do it, you will run across imperfections form time to time and you will want to strangle your own herd. Poor ponies.

Yes, I've been having tons of trouble as well (especially with tinsel!!!) but you have to keep trying. I think a lot of time the 'dismount' when taking the curlers off can ruin the curl. For a few I've given up on curling and gone with the 'wrap around neck and let dry' method that gives it the simple curl around look. But for Rarity I suppose it'd be a shame if she didn't have great curls, just trying to keep practicing

I use ZennaBug's technique only I use pencils. They are heavier and helps pull down the mane's roots. I didn't have luck w/ the straws myself, but hers looks wonderful!

You are not the only one!! I have a devil of a time getting curls to look good. >_<
I carefully wrap the hair around straws (sometimes pens and other cylindrical things), and make sure the ends are also nicely tucked in, but the hair always comes out at an odd angle or with other hairs that fling out of place when I take the wrapping off.... :P
