Styling issues... glow hair
« on: January 18, 2012, 01:31:14 PM »
Ugh, this custom has been a pain in my butt like no other.

The only issue has been, and a constant at that, her hair. When I was pulling out her old hair i noticed that hasbro got really crazy with their glue and her forehead had a giant chunk of solid, dried mess that could not be removed with acetone, boiling water, or me hacking at it with several tools. Eventually I get it out and start rehairing her and was excited to use my glow-in-the-dark hair. Well I had no idea that hair had a different consistency to it. It's much less greasy I guess, it doesn't separate itself into the little chunks that I use for each plug (while the other hair I have does). Not only that but it was so brittle! I wasted so much hair because it would break apart when I was putting the plug in the hole. I thought at first I was using too big of hair chunks but nope, size didn't matter and it was basically a crap shoot if the hair would stay in one piece.

Anyway, I overcame all of that but now I have this; basically a styling disaster. I did all the normal things I do for curls, but this time the hair was like "nope! I want to be a frizzy mess!". So basically I'm wondering if there is any way to fix this without having to condition and re-do the curls? If there's not I'll just have to do it, but I'd rather not get her wet if possible, I get nervous with a wet tail right by the paint.

I really dislike GITD it is such a pain to work with!

Did you try boil perming the curls?

I didn't try the boil perm, I just used hot water. Will boiling it get rid of the frizz though?

She is really pretty but yeah GITD has always been evil to work with for me too. The last hank I got is so knotted up I can't really use it.  A boil perm may help but I really can't come up with a way to fix it that doesn't involve washing it out and starting over.

Yes, like I said I did all the normal things, but for some reason it's just super frizzy.

And yeah I guess I'll just have to suck it up and condition then try a boil perm. As you can see I didn't do the mane yet because I figured the GITD hair would make it more difficult and I wanted to see first (glad I did!). Hopefully the recurl will fix it :)

And thanks Kaos! I'm pretty fond of how she turned out

Boiling it should help. As far as I know there are no issues with it, but might be worth trying a test strand first. Plus wrap it really tight around the straws.

You could try a straightening iron too, but again I'd test it first. If you straighten hair with conditioner on it (I don't recommend it with brand new expensive straightners! You need some with a low heat setting) then it can make it lovely and smooth.

I've never personally used the GITD hair, it sounds like it is awful to work with :( what a shame! It looks so neat all lit up in the dark too :/
