Two Questions About Pony Hair
« on: January 18, 2012, 10:37:10 AM »
I have had too many questions lately, lol.

Just two quick ones; I dyed a pony using black rit dye a few weeks ago to prep it for a custom. Flash foward a few weeks; the dye is bleeding out of the head plastic and back on to the plate. So I made a hair plug and just did one and let it set; sure enough, the hair started to turn black as it sucked up the dye. I haven't sealed the head yet, and the body isn't doing this. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, what, if anything, fixes it?

Secondly, I'm in the middle of making a custom Lyra from FIM and I have never done that kind of hair styling before, with the bangs and the short hair. Anyone have any tips for styling it? Thanks!

Wow!! It sounds like the dye is not setting!

Try rinsing the pony really well with cold water.

Then, let her sit for several days!

 I hope she stops bleeding!

I will give it a try and see if that helps. At current it is a very -slow- bleed, which is the annoying part lol. I get my hopes up that it has stopped only to find, no, it hasn't lol.

I've also heard people suggest boiling a dyed object again with a little vinegar. Does anyone know if this works?

Boiling would open up the plastic again. Vinegar (at least when dying fibers/eggs) is used as an acid to help the dye stick better. So it could help. Rinsing VERY VERY well in cold water will help the plastic close up again and be less porous, trapping the dye inside. Blue and Black are the hardest colours to get to take, and tend to need longer rinsing times, and still exhaust a lot of dye. Good luck!
