I apologuise in advance as I know most of you have probably already answered questions like this over and over again, However I'm currently trying to remove the neck plugs from two g4 ponies I've nought to customise for a friend and her husband's belated christmas presents.

I've currently tried leaving the ponies to soak in boiling hot water and using a hobby knife to cut around the seam on the inside but I'm struggling and have cut a little into the actual plastic of the pony, is there another way of going about this which will cause less damage or have I already made a big balls up?
